 Peticolas Brewing’s Velvet Hammer

Of all the brews that Dallas’ Peticolas Brewing has to offer, Velvet Hammer sits in a class all its own. This Imperial Red Ale was the first brew in the Peticolas line-up, giving it a special place in the hearts of their brewers and customers alike.

THE BASICS

The namesake might seem like contradiction, but anyone who’s tried the Velvet Hammer themselves can tell you just how appropriate that name is. The sweet caramel taste gives us the “velvet,” and the “hammer” becomes obvious when you notice the bold, bitter hops flavor, its 9% ABV content, and its IBU of 85.

THE TASTE

What gives Velvet Hammer it’s distinct taste is its two key ingredients: hops and time. Peticolas uses four different kinds of hops, and staggers the time in which they add them in. Hops added at the top of the brewing process end up giving the beer a bitter kick. Those added later provide a smooth hoppy taste, and the ones dropped in just before the process is over supply the signature Velvet Hammer aroma that Dallas craft brew aficionados have come to know and love.

THE AWARDS

As you may have guessed, a brew like this is sure to gain some well deserved recognition. The good folks at Peticolas have earned themselves some serious accolades in the brewing world, including:

THE FOOD

A hoppy brew like this goes best with a nice dish of something with a little spice to it. Perhaps a plate of beef enchiladas with a generous helping of Cholula, or some Kung Pao chicken slathered in Sriracha. Velvet Hammer’s smooth bite helps cut down the spiciness of these hot dishes. Sort of like a “Capsaicin Companion,” if you will.
